I've been addicted to alcohol for most of my adult life and i have tried numerous therapies, most of them without success, the reason being that i am a rebel at heart and i don't like being told off. "Charter has simply been the turning point in my life so far. It's an amazing place, quite exceptional. I came in extremely unwell with sex, love, work, internet, money and drug issues even after years in recovery. I committed to both day care and Primrose Hill and this total immersion made all the difference. Charter is totally unique in what it does. I was made to feel like an individual, not just a number, like the team absolutely knew that my life was at stake, and that I wasn't going to be abandoned after only getting half-well. It offered me a chance to get a rock solid foundation for recovery not just in one area but in the whole of my addictive cycle and indeed the whole of my life. In this sense I would say it offers a new and innovative kind of highly flexible, total treatment. I suddenly felt safe enough, as soon as I met Mandy, to really explore everything that had been holding me back. Mandy is the most lovingly rigorous addiction therapist imaginable. She has piercing honesty, absolute kindness when needed, and most importantly a kind of infectious but completely wise-eyed interest in you as a human being. I soon realised working with her was a unique chance to get real psychic change, not just short-term detox. What makes Charter so special is the way Mandy works with the rest of the team, especially Clare in Tertiary, to create a complete picture of what you need and where you're at on an almost second by second basis. I felt seen and heard. This made me feel safe enough to get on with the painful risks I needed to take in group to get properly well; the risks I'd spent a whole life avoiding. Part of my addictive cycle was a kind of emotional or social anorexia. Being in group and then sharing a room in Tertiary (though there are single rooms as well!) was decisive as a kind of experiential withdrawal from that anorexia. Mandy, Clare, Tom and Tony actually care, and this has made me care too. For the first time I wanted not just to get clean in all areas but to live a full and real life. I came in on the verge of death, unemployed for years, terrified to love and be loved, completely powerless, with severe sleep problems. I am now leaving with a job, no sleep problems, real substance and emotional sobriety, and a zest for life. For me what worked was to stay until the underlying feelings, and not just addictive symptoms, had been dealt with. As I got better I was trusted to trust myself again, going back to real life but still using the odd one or two days in day-care to check my progress. Mandy's team works brilliantly from day one to help you close off those emotional loopholes which otherwise might overwhelm you later on in the rooms and in life. Nothing less, in a sense, than about as much life insurance as an addict can expect! I recommend Charter Day Care and Tertiary without reservations".
