Counselling Services

At Charter we provide a number of different counselling services which are able to provide you with the most suitable space in which to address difficulties. Below is a description of the different forms of counselling services which we offer at Charter.

Group addiction treatment therapy programme

Our addiction treatment programmes are largely carried out in group sessions, which are the most effective way of tackling addiction problems. There are many reasons why group sessions are the most appropriate form of counselling for addiction, but the principal benefits are that group work provides the isolation-fracturing experience of shared recovery and identification which is the mainstay of ongoing recovery, and allows the relational aspects of the condition (see our Family Groups, Relationships and Co-dependency sections) to be examined 'in real time', which is enormously beneficial to understanding how addiction operates within the self as it relates to others and the world at large. This approach is the core of the therapy programme at Charter Day Care.

The treatment philosophy is based around the 12 step model of treatment, and our clients are encouraged to attend meetings of fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. Groups take many different forms, and can be based around a particular issue or piece of work produced by a group member, or operate as open-ended "process groups". In addition, groups involving psychodrama, movement therapy, art therapy and interactive psychoeducational seminars are also part of the timetable.

One-to-one, relationship and conjoint therapy sessions

Private one-to-one sessions are available either as a part of a larger group-based treatment or as standalone therapy sessions for individuals or couples. We see clients on a one-to-one or joint basis who have been in treatment for addiction in the past, or who are struggling with personal difficulties unrelated to addiction.

Our counselling team contains several experienced therapists, and at an assessment for one-to-one or couples counselling you will be advised on the likely best fit for you, or indeed recommended to an outside therapist with whom we work closely. For more on the services available to couples, siblings, parents and children, see our page on Relationship Counselling.

'Conjoint' sessions are held with the family members of clients in our treatment programme. These, coupled with the support available in our Family Groups, provide an invaluable resource for healing and growth in the relationships between family members and clients in recovery.

Specialist one-to-one work

At Charter we are also able to provide you with therapy sessions for specific issues such as trauma, as well as offering guidance on accessing appropriate help for counselling for young adults, adolescents and children. Contact us for more information.
