Family Support

The families of those suffering from addictions are almost always closely involved in the distress, confusion and shame that surround these conditions. In fact addiction is often described as a family illness, since its effects are felt throughout the family of the addicted person. Sometimes it is a family member who makes the first contact with a potential source of help for their loved one. If the family of the person receiving treatment is involved in the process it can significantly improve the outcome of treatment. It is also very important that families receive support, gain understanding and have the opportunity to make their own voices heard. At Charter we believe strongly in involving the families of our clients wherever possible, both in joint counselling sessions and through our family groups, which provide invaluable support and information around the complexities of addiction and recovery in the context of the family.
